Worth being straight about this one before planning a trip around it. The name carries the word motorcycle, but the show is built around cars. More than a hundred classes of competition are rod, custom and truck categories. Bikes get a single Best Bike award.
It has been run since 1973 by the New family, who own Firebird Raceway out at Eagle. Scott, John and Brad New still hand out the trophies themselves, and the top prize, the Goldmark, goes to the best vehicle in the hall regardless of how many wheels it has. Recent years have brought in guests of the Chip Foose order. It is a fifty-four-year-old institution of the Boise spring, and it is an automotive one.
For a custom builder with a bike worth showing, that need not be a problem. The entry fee is modest and the audience is large. For a rider hoping for a bike show, it is the wrong weekend. Either way it is indoors at Expo Idaho in Garden City, in mid-March, on the edge of suburban Boise, and nobody is riding anywhere.
The clearest picture of the balance is the floor plan. Motorcycle stands are ten feet by ten, car displays twice that.
