Law enforcement shuts I-84 for this one. Fifty-five miles of interstate between High Desert Harley-Davidson in Meridian and Carl Miller Park in Mountain Home are closed to traffic so that more than a thousand bikes can run it as a single escorted pack, which is the rarest thing an American charity ride can offer and the reason nervous riders turn up: nothing to navigate and nothing coming the other way. No founder's name is attached to Idaho Patriot Thunder anywhere it publishes, which is unusual for a ride this size. What is attached is the destination of the money. It splits equally between Operation Warmheart, the 366th Fighter Wing's own relief fund at Mountain Home Air Force Base, and the Idaho National Guard and Reserve Family Support Fund, one recent year handing over forty-three and a half thousand dollars in two matching cheques. Thirty-five dollars early, forty on the day, rider or passenger. It leaves at ten behind an honour guard and a period flyover, and a howitzer is fired to start it. Sagebrush and Snake River plain the whole way; the party is back at the dealership from two.
