Fire & Iron 216 - 6th Annual Autism Run

Saturday, July 17, 2027 · 10 AM · Devils Lake, North Dakota

About this event

What this ride pays for is not treatment. It pays for the appointment that tells a family what they are dealing with, and that appointment runs into thousands of dollars -- which is how a firefighters' motorcycle club in Devils Lake came to be funding a clinic in Grand Forks.

Joe Getty started it after his son Greyson was diagnosed with autism, and after he found out that the diagnostic clinic at Altru Health System ran entirely on donations. An evaluation there takes in speech, occupational and physical therapy screening, and none of it is cheap. Fire and Iron is the firefighters' club, organised into numbered stations; this is Station 216. Their treasurer Josh Bierman put the reasoning about as plainly as it can be put: there is a need for it, and if they can help in any way, they will.

The riding is Red River Valley flat. A recent edition ran ninety miles across prairie pothole country between Grand Forks and Devils Lake, finishing at the Spirit Lake resort south of town. Twenty-five dollars a bike, ten a rider.

They handed over seven and a half thousand dollars one year and eleven thousand and eight dollars the next, plus seventy cents. Nobody rounded it up.
