Most poker runs finish at a bar. This one is run by a club whose members are all clean and sober, and the money buys Christmas presents for children whose parents are in recovery.
The Pioneers Motorcycle Club calls itself a traditional MC with one difference: sobriety is the condition of membership. Its own listing calls this the 24th annual Choke Your Turkey Run, which puts the first one around 2003; the club's Banner Run and campout up on Banner Grade reached its 41st this May, so the Pioneers have been at this since the mid-1980s. Who founded the club, and when, it has never published.
Twenty dollars a rider, thirty two-up. Registration opens at nine at San Diego Harley-Davidson on Morena Boulevard, last bike out at ten, back by two, with music, food, a raffle and a 50/50 to finish.
The club's own rules for its campout tell you the tone of the day as well as anything could: no pets, no drugs, no booze and no attitudes. The natural loop from Morena runs east into the backcountry towards Julian, which is the ground this club knows best.
