Grand Fathers MC chose its date: 8 August 1988 — 8-8-88 — on Grand Avenue in southern California, with Sam Smith named in the motorcycle press as the man who started it. The club's emphasis has always been family in two senses, blood and the kind you pick, and the coverage of its long-running campouts describes a club that runs annual fundraisers for the local indigent rather than for anything grander.
