About this event
Rider-rights chapters usually send their fundraising up to a national body. The Ace Basin chapter has spent twenty-four years sending it a few miles down the road. Its beneficiary is the Colleton Baptist Association Christmas Project, started by Roland Marchant around 1990 and still going: shopping teams working from lists for children from newborn to seventeen, with whatever cash is left over and the donated food turned into Christmas dinners. In a recent year that came to roughly a hundred and eighty-seven children and a hundred and one family food boxes. The chapter's own phrasing is blunter than any sales pitch, calling the Project the only organisation that helps provide toys for children that live right in our county. Ace Basin belongs to ABATE of South Carolina, whose long fight is the helmet law, amended in 1980 to give adults over twenty-one the choice and defended against every bill since. The ride is flat Lowcountry two-lane through the ACE Basin backcountry, with stops at a country store in Crocketville and a grill in St George, and the handover happens in Walterboro: a trailer of toys and an envelope.
