About this event
The Savannah Toy Run is exactly as old as the club that runs it, which is unusual. The Wingmen Motorcycle Club chartered its Savannah chapter in May 1991 and started the toy run the same year. The club itself was founded in the spring of 1976 at Boscomantico, outside Verona, by paratroopers of the 1st Battalion, 509th Airborne; on 4 July 1979 the members voted on a name and took Wingmen, after the way two pilots cover each other, keeping the American eagle on the patch. The first US chapter opened in Fayetteville that September. The run is now shared with ABATE of Georgia District 11, with Savannah HOG and clubs from eight surrounding counties falling in behind. Riders gather at Savannah Harley-Davidson on Fort Argyle Road around eleven, then take Abercorn Street down to Victory Drive and out to the Wingmen clubhouse on Ross Road for barbecue. Entry is a twenty-dollar toy or twenty dollars in cash, and the gifts reach more than two thousand local children. Children from Magdalene House get theirs at the event, before anyone else.
