Most heart-disease fundraisers are run by the bereaved. This one is run by the patient. The founder was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and right-sided heart failure at thirty-seven, and describes the symptoms plainly: struggling to breathe, lips and fingertips going blue, and no idea that any of it was the heart. The idea arrived in January 2020 and the first run went out that September. Education matters here as much as the money does — the warning signs that got missed once, put in front of people who might miss them too. Twenty dollars buys a poker hand and a lunch ticket, with a hundred and fifty to the best hand, a hundred to the worst, and the proceeds going to the American Heart Association. No route or mileage is published, so treat it as a sociable day rather than a touring one. Two surprise payouts get called out across the dealership forecourt at half past nine, before anyone has left.
