This is not an event you turn up to so much as a route you are handed. New Sweden BMW Riders email a GPX file to everyone registered by the Thursday deadline, sign-in closes at ten in the morning with no allowance for the late, and after that you ride four hundred and fifty miles of backroads over two days on your own navigation, alone or with whoever you fell in with. The club says plainly that it is geared towards the experienced rider, and means it. New Sweden was founded in 1981 in Salem County and takes its name from the seventeenth-century Swedish colony on the Delaware; it is an AMA-chartered club for German machinery that has never turned anyone else away. No charity is attached — this is a club rally, not a fundraiser, and the entry buys free camping, a Saturday buffet with door prizes and breakfast before you leave. The destination moves every year, which is rather the point: one year the route ran out into the Pennsylvania backcountry and finished near Burnt Cabins, the next it crossed into New York. Rain or shine, and the day is your own responsibility.
