Blue Knights NYC Rock Ride

About this event
The name gives nothing away. The Rock is Rockefeller Center, and this is the ride that arrives under the Christmas tree behind a police escort, with hundreds of bikes dressed up as sleighs — not a decoration most riders would attempt on a slow December run through Midtown. It belongs to Blue Knights New Jersey XV, a chapter of the international law enforcement motorcycle club that a handful of officers started around Bangor, Maine in the spring of 1974. The club has no prospect period, takes any make of bike, and has admitted women on equal terms to membership and to office. The New Jersey chapter dates itself by paperwork rather than ceremony: its oldest surviving sign-in sheet comes from a meeting at the Andiron Inn in Marlboro in August 1994, and it names Tim Emmons as its founder. Admission is one new unwrapped toy, and the rule attached to it is specific: no stuffed animals. The toys go into Toys for Tots. The entry money goes to the widows and children of officers killed on duty, in New York and New Jersey both.
