This poker run is organised by estate agents, and that is not a joke at its expense. VAREP is the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals, the working name of the USA Homeownership Foundation, set up in 2011 and registered both as a charity and, since 2019, as a veterans service organisation. Its business is getting veterans into houses — VA loan counselling, homeownership education, affordable housing, job placement, small business mentoring — so a run put on by mortgage and property people for veterans buying homes is a trade raising money inside its own field rather than an odd pairing. The Fresno chapter runs it and the Fresno chapter keeps it, spending it on veterans locally. Four stops around the city from a start on North Blackstone Avenue, nine in the morning until two, with lunch and an after-party at the end. Thirty-five dollars, or thirty booked early, fifteen for a passenger and ten for an extra hand up to two. The detail that tells you what the day is actually like: twenty dollars buys the lunch and the after-party with no bike at all.
