About this event
Washington County's Toys for Tots campaign was one man's work for more than fifteen years. Rick Massey, a retired Marine gunnery sergeant, ran it until he died unexpectedly in 2020, by which time it had put toys into the hands of more than five thousand southern Utah children, and a St George car show was renamed after him. Pam Curtis has it now, working with Marine Corps League Detachment 1270; last season the campaign moved 15,885 toys to 3,749 children.
Zion Harley-Davidson, which takes the donations, opened in 2000 as a satellite of the Las Vegas store, built by Don Andress and Tim Cashman — Cashman's family had founded Nevada's first car dealership back in 1910 — and changed hands again in December 2018. Laura Lavigne, who has run the place for years, puts its appeal plainly: it is right there on the route to Zion.
That route is State Route 9, the first road in Utah named a national scenic byway, which runs from La Verkin through Springdale to the park's east gate. The store lays on a free barbecue every Saturday, so the drop-off costs a rider nothing but the toy and the detour.
