AMC is not the cinema chain. It stands for arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, a condition present at birth in which the joints are fixed and the muscle underdeveloped, and almost nobody outside the families affected has heard of it. That is the entire reason this ride exists.
Jayson Bird of Midvale organises it. His son Axton has AMC severely, in all four limbs, and Bird's account of why he started running motorcycle rides is plain enough: to get people to understand what his son has. There is no national charity behind it and no corporate name on the shirts. It is a father with a route, raising some money and, more to the point, raising the question.
Which makes it an easy day to turn up to. Any street bike will do, the Wasatch Front gives you canyon roads close to the suburbs, and the crowd is families rather than clubs.
The picture is smaller than most. It is a father in a car park explaining a diagnosis to strangers who have just asked what the letters stand for, which is exactly what the ride is for.
