About this event
A first-year show, put on by an organisation more than a century old. Onslow County Detachment 262 of the Marine Corps League runs this one, and the League itself began on 10 November 1922 at the Hotel McAlpin in New York, at a founding meeting led by a retired major named Sidney W. Brewster; Major General John A. Lejeune is credited among its founders, and Congress chartered it in 1937, which makes it the only congressionally chartered Marine Corps veterans organisation. Detachment 262 draws about 140 members from Camp Lejeune, MCAS New River and the Fleet Marine Force, meets on third Tuesdays at the DAV building on Sherwood Road, and spends most of its year on Toys for Tots, JROTC and Young Marines units, and helping Marines of any age through VA paperwork. The venue is New River Harley-Davidson on Wilmington Highway, open since 2004 under Rick and Janice Noyes, and the detail that explains this town better than anything else is the service it runs out of the back: storage for riders' bikes while their owners are deployed.
