Fraternal Order of Eagles #147 9th Annual Exoskeleton Poker Run
Saturday, July 10, 2027 · 9 AM · Fraternal Order of Eagles #147, Lincoln, NE · Lincoln, Nebraska
About this event
The word in the title is a trademark, not a body part, and the Eagles spell it with a k: Eksoskeleton. Ekso Bionics builds powered leg braces that stand a paralysed person upright and walk them across a rehabilitation gym, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles has been buying them since 2016 and giving them away.
Six suits so far. The Minneapolis VA had the first, then Long Beach, then the Younker Rehabilitation Center in Des Moines. But three of the six are in Nebraska -- CHI Health and Methodist in Omaha, and Bryan Health here in Lincoln. That last one is what makes this particular run concrete: the riders are paying towards a machine that already exists a few miles from where they park.
Lincoln Eagles Aerie 147, out on West Industrial Lake Drive, has coordinated it since 2019. Most of it is for veterans with spinal cord injuries, some of it routed through SoldierStrong. The aerie publishes neither the route nor the entry fee in advance, so ring the club.
What the money buys, in the aerie's own account of it, is a man standing up.
