AMVETS Post 26 in Dover quietly covers the thirty-five dollar annual dues for any veteran who cannot find the money. That is the kind of post this is — chartered on 9 November 2006, running on the phrase "veterans helping veterans", with a Ladies Auxiliary, a Sons chapter, Junior AMVETS and its own riders group.
The chili cook-off is held there by CVMA Chapter 20-17, based twelve miles down the road in Riverview. The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association calls itself an association rather than a club on purpose, and the reason is in its founding: the organisation its members first joined in the late 1990s turned out to be run by a fraud, and when the survivors rebuilt it in December 2002 they wrote prospecting out of the rules altogether. No one who had already earned their place was going to earn it twice.
The country here is flat east Hillsborough strawberry farmland between Plant City and Brandon, section-line roads, nothing to ride for. The post hall is the point. The chapter has not published a price, a time or where the money goes.
