29th Annual Critter Run

About this event

Turn up with a bag of shelter supplies and you get an extra card. The Critter Run is a poker run for the Brevard Humane Society, founded in 1952 by a group of volunteers and the oldest animal welfare organisation in the county; its promise is that nothing admitted is put down for reasons of time, space or a treatable condition, and it reports a full live-release rate. Registration and the start are at the society's Cocoa adoption centre on Cox Road, bikes away between ten and half past eleven, three card stops through the flat Space Coast countryside, and the last bike in by half past three at the H and D Roadhouse on the Merritt Island causeway, which is a different address from the start and worth knowing in advance. Ten dollars a hand, with cash for the best, the worst and a mystery hand, and an after-party of a band, food, vendors and a fifty-fifty draw that non-riders can join. Who founded it is not recorded; the society's own note is that Sally Frey organised it almost from the beginning.
