Most motorcycle clubs will take you on the strength of the bike. The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association checks your record. Full membership requires verified combat service — not service, combat — with a second tier for veterans who served without it and a third for spouses and surviving partners. The national body formed in 2001, and its motto is the whole of its purpose: veterans helping veterans.
Chapter 33-3 covers the Inland Empire and runs this as its own fundraiser, a 501(c)(3) day of riding, raffles and music built around a poker run. The chapter says openly that it is for all experience levels, which is worth knowing, because a club with that entry requirement can look closed from the outside and the ride is not.
It stages from a motorsports bar in Lake Elsinore, which puts the Ortega Highway and the Santa Ana range within easy reach, though the chapter does not publish its route.
The picture is the opening ceremony. A poker run that starts with one, before a single kickstand is up, is telling you what the day is actually for.
