About this event
At most rallies nothing is compulsory. At this one the safety meeting is, and the chairman runs it himself, going through what will actually catch a rider out in whichever state the rally has landed in that year - deer, poor surfaces, local hazards.
The American Voyager Association describes itself as the world's largest group of Kawasaki Voyager owners, though it takes all brands. Membership is twenty-five dollars a year and brings a four-inch patch, year pins and the Voyagers' Voice newsletter. Who founded it, and when, is not published anywhere the club controls.
The rally runs four days and is organised around learning rather than drinking: a women's forum on hydration, clothing and what a passenger does in an emergency, maintenance demonstrations, a guided ride led by the chairman, a judged show with classes down to bike-and-trailer combinations, a lighting show, and a closing banquet.
The image that sticks is the car park - cones laid out for tight turns, figure eights and slaloms, then the same riders at ring toss, solo and two-up.
