ABATE 2nd Sunday Swap Meet - October

About this event
A swap meet in a dealership car park does not look like political work. This one is. The tables are run by the South-East Portland chapter of ABATE of Oregon, and what the day takes goes into the organisation's lobbying, because ABATE is a 501(c)(4) civic league rather than a charity.
It was founded on 22 August 1975 with Luke Metcalfe as its first chairman, under the name A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments. It trades now as A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education, which tells you something about how the fight has changed. The original object was Oregon's helmet law, and freedom of choice was won in 1977. Four years later the same people wrote rider training into state law, which is where Team Oregon came from.
The meet itself is the ordinary, useful kind: tables of used parts on tarmac off McLoughlin Boulevard south of Portland, at the point where the valley floor runs out and the Clackamas River and Mount Hood foothill roads begin.
It suits parts hunters and people who keep old bikes running rather than anyone looking for a ride.
