About this event
The date is not the day he died. It is his birthday. Kyle Bowersox was born in Philadelphia on 20 December 1993, grew up in Marietta, finished at Lassiter High School in 2013 and enlisted in the Marine Corps on 5 January 2015, training as an air crewman at Pensacola. He was home in Cobb County that September to help his mother through surgery. Riding late on a Friday night near Town Center Mall, a sixteen-year-old driver turned left across him; he laid the bike down, slid into the back of the car and did not regain consciousness. He died on 4 September 2015, aged twenty-one. His obituary records that he loved motorcycles and cars, Mustangs above all. So this is not a combat memorial and should not be ridden as one: a Marine killed on a motorcycle at home, remembered by other riders on the day he was born, three days before Christmas. What happens on the day, what it costs and who receives anything raised are not published, and the choice of a Savannah start for a man from the Atlanta suburbs is nowhere explained.
