Christian motorcycle ministry in Colorado Springs had split the way churches do — the clubs, the ministries and the associations all running separately from one another. Pikes Peak Biker's Church was founded in 2007 to put them in one room on the second Saturday of every month, and its remit has since widened from Christian bikers to, in its own phrasing, any and all broken and lost people.
The June Saturday is the largest of those gatherings. Bikes roll into a Methodist church lot on East Monument Street from eight in the morning to be blessed one at a time, and the blessing runs a full two hours before the car and bike show judging opens at nine. There is a kid zone, a vendor row, a photo scavenger hunt that sends riders out across the city, a barbecue at half twelve and an auction at one.
Ten dollars to enter a machine, ten for the barbecue, twenty-five for the scavenger hunt, and a hundred in cash for each People's Choice. It is a cheap, unhurried, family morning rather than a destination worth crossing a state for.
