Forty-seven years running, in December, in western Colorado — which tells you something about the people who do it. The Western Slope Harley Owners Group toy run starts at the Grand Junction dealership and finishes at the Moose Lodge, and one unwrapped toy is the entry fee. The haul is serious: around six thousand toys in a recent year, all of it going to the Salvation Army for families across the Western Slope. Locals describe it as one of the biggest events of any kind in that part of the state. The route runs out along Crossroads and down 12th Street to North Avenue, then south through town — 12th and North are the places to stand if you would rather watch than ride. All makes turn out, not just Harleys. The after-party at the Moose Lodge brings food, raffles, door prizes and a draw for a Daytona trip. Registration opens mid-morning; kickstands up at noon, rain, snow or shine.
