15th Annual Matthew 'Scrapper' Hanes Memorial Ride
Saturday, April 24, 2027 · 10 AM · York, Pennsylvania
About this event
This was not a memorial ride when it started. Matthew Hanes was alive for the first few, and they were run to help him.
Hanes grew up outside York and left Northeastern High School in 2010 for the Army. In 2012, on his last mission in Afghanistan, he was shot and paralysed from the chest down. The Warrior Brotherhood Veterans Motorcycle Club, which he belonged to, had given him the name Scrapper, and it was the Warrior Brotherhood that began running a benefit ride and concert in his name. By the third of them, in 2015, it was raising around seventeen thousand dollars for other wounded veterans. He died that August at York Hospital, of a blood clot.
The ride carried on under his name.
Little is published about how it runs now beyond the name and the place, so it is worth a call before setting off from any distance. What it plainly is, is a York County veterans' ride with fifteen years behind it and a man behind that, and a club that started raising money for him while he could still be told about it.
