A lot of veterans' rides are aimed at the veterans who turn up. Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association chapter 45-2 runs this one at the ones who don't: the riders, as chapter member Larry "Gadget" Gordon puts it, who never got a welcome home, or who feel they have been lost somewhere inside the veteran system.
The chapter meets at the VFW post in Eau Claire and holds a monthly meat raffle at a bar in Chippewa Falls, which is roughly the scale of the thing. Local, unglamorous, fifteen years running. The money stays in the region: Sofas for Service, Poppy and Friends, the Chippewa Veterans Home. The chapter's PR officer, David "Philly" Louden, describes the day as a chance to tell war stories and also to think about the people who gave a great deal more than a story.
It is one day. Registration and a pancake breakfast from nine, kickstands up at eleven, a paved run through the Chippewa Valley, then a bar and grill at the end with a 50/50 and raffles. Twenty dollars a rider, ten for a passenger, any make of bike. Around a hundred turn out.
The 2026 raffle put a new Street Glide up as the grand prize.
