12th Annual Motorcycle Ride for the Veterans
Saturday, September 11, 2027 · Xenia, Ohio
About this event
Before 2015, nine out of ten veterans buried at Dayton National Cemetery went into the ground without full military honours. There was nobody to perform them. The Dayton National Cemetery Honor Squad was formed to fix exactly that, turning out for the first time on Memorial Day of that year, and it now states that every veteran buried there receives the full ceremony - the salute, the flag folding, the flag presentation and Taps. It is an all-volunteer body with no government funding, which is what this ride is for.
Riders gather at the Harley-Davidson dealership on Cincinnati Avenue in Xenia and run roughly a hundred miles of Greene County farm roads behind a police escort, one way, finishing at a VFW post with food, a fifty-fifty draw, raffle prizes and an auction. Recent editions have asked twenty-five dollars for the rider and five for a passenger.
The route goes out through the Dayton VA campus. The cemetery is on that same ground, so the pack rides past the graves it is paying for the honours at.
