To understand this poker run you have to look at a strip of grass in the middle of Fort Campbell Boulevard. Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association Chapter 18-2 — the Queen City chapter, chartered in July 2007 under a commander who went by Medicine Man — has maintained Patriots Park in that median since 2011, and each year plants a small American flag in it for every soldier out of Fort Campbell killed since September 2001. One recent count came to six hundred and fifty-three flags standing in rows in the middle of a busy road. Since 2021 the chapter has been building a memorial wall there, a project on the order of a hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The poker run is the only CVMA-sanctioned event the chapter puts on; it started in 2016, under a member called Smoke. Full membership is for combat-verified veterans, with support and auxiliary ranks alongside, but the run itself is open to anyone. The country around Clarksville and Fort Campbell is flat farmland — an easy day on any machine.
