About this event
Most toy runs end at a fire station a few miles from where they started. This one crosses an international border. It began when Gabriel Gonzalez and a handful of Solo Angeles members rode toys down to a Tijuana orphanage, and he has given the arithmetic himself: "We were 15 bikers, there were 15 toys and there were 30 kids." That was the mid-1980s, and Mexican press had the run in its thirty-second year in 2017, which makes a forty-first edition consistent with the count. It has not stayed small. By 2017 the club was reporting more than three thousand riders and seven thousand toys, with Avenida Revolución closed for hours at the Tijuana end — a procession one San Diego paper likened to a stampede of metal horses. Toys are gathered on the US side at Hacienda Casa Blanca in El Cajon before the caravan rides south. Solo Angeles is a Tijuana club rather than a local chapter, and the ride crosses the line properly, so bring a passport. It suits riders who are comfortable in a very large group.
