About this event
Most charity rides send every bike down the same road and hope the pace sorts itself out. Deer Run splits the field by what you ride: adventure bikes onto dirt and through water crossings, touring bikes on rural two-lanes, cruisers on the smooth scenic roads of Middle Tennessee. David Gibson, who founded Deer Run, leads one of the routes himself.
The camp is a Christian retreat centre south of Nashville, and the ride funds its MISSION 42:1 scholarship fund — summer camp places and parent-child weekends for children whose families cannot pay, including children who have lost a parent or have one in prison. Jenny Dyer, the development director, describes it as bringing riders together for a day of adventure while making a difference to those kids, which is about as plainly as a camp can put it.
It is a half-day: check-in at nine, pancakes, a short programme, and the routes leave at half past ten and are back by one. Breakfast is free and registration is required. They suggest a hundred dollars and say no donation is too small. Alcohol-free and family-friendly. The adventure route is the interesting one and the reason to bring the right bike.
