One of the largest motorcycle gatherings in the country, and free to walk into. Lone Star takes over three parts of Galveston — the Strand, Pier 21 and Beach Central Park — for four days each November, drawing something in the region of four hundred thousand people and a hundred and fifty thousand motorcycles to an island you reach by causeway. More than forty acts play across two main stages. Between them sit hundreds of vendors, custom bike and classic car displays, tattoo and sound competitions, food trucks and the Strand's own bars and restaurants working at full stretch. The scale is the experience: the Strand's Victorian buildings with bikes parked solid down both sides is the image people come back for. Go early in the day if you want to actually see the custom builds, and plan your crossing — island traffic is the one predictable difficulty of the weekend.
