Most dealership open days put a band in the car park and call it entertainment. This one parks a wooden barrel on the tarmac and sends motorcycles round the inside of it.
The Ives family of South Florida have been riding the Wall of Death for over twenty years. Shawn Ives ran away to join the circus at sixteen and learned high-wire work from Karl Wallenda; he met Tonya, an elephant rider, who later balanced on his shoulders during tightrope acts. Both of them fell for the wall instead. Their son Cody started riding the drum at seven, practising after school for a year before his father would join him inside; his brother Kyle rides it now too. Shawn bought an aluminium wall in Montreal early on, disliked how modern it looked, and built the wooden one the brothers still tour with, out of Douglas fir, yellow pine and ash.
The machines are old: a 1953 Harley two-stroke single, a 1974 Aermacchi SX250, a 1984 Honda CB125. Kyle rides the top edge of the drum at head height, taking twenty-dollar bills out of spectators' hands as he passes. Admission is free.
