About this event
The name on this listing does not match any Backcountry Discovery Route. Georgia's actual BDR is the Chattahoochee BDR-X, a 350-mile loop laid out by route architect Kik Lakeman and unveiled in September 2024. The Georgia Traverse is a different thing: a 390-mile east-to-west crossing, 226 miles of it unpaved, assembled over years by David Giguere of Georgia Overland out of county, state and Forest Service roads, running from Burrells Ford Road on the South Carolina line to the Alabama line, with more than five hundred waypoints and water crossings that can turn impassable after rain. Which of the two this weekend follows is not published anywhere. What is certain is the basecamp. Two Wheels of Suches began as Two Wheels Only under Frank and Jeannie Cheek, closed in 2010, and was bought and reopened by Bill Johnston, a Suches local who has ridden these mountain roads since the early 1990s and took on neighbouring land to make room for bigger gatherings. Eight cabins, a new bathhouse, a loading ramp, and a porch built for watching riders come in off Wolf Pen Gap.
