Most memorial events at a Harley dealership are for a customer. This one is for the man who worked the parts counter.
Daniel von Seggern grew up at North Hooper, Nebraska, and lived at Fremont. He was parts manager at Dillon Brothers Harley-Davidson in Omaha, and before that he gave twenty-two years to the Army Reserve — first as a cavalry scout, then in logistics, through Desert Storm and two tours in Iraq — retiring as a first sergeant. He died in September 2022, aged fifty-five, leaving his wife Lori and four children. The family asked that memorials go to the veterans' park at Fremont.
The dealership and its Harley Owners Group chapter run the cook-off in his name. Teams compete for the title over a couple of hours in the middle of the day. What it costs to enter, how the judging is done and where the money goes are not published.
It is a car park and a paper bowl rather than a ride, which is the right shape for it: the people who knew him were mostly standing on one side or the other of that counter.
