About this event
ABATE of Illinois exists to lobby. A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education is a motorcyclists' rights body organised into six regional chapters out of a state office in Decatur, and most of its year goes on legislation. This is the weekend it throws a party instead — in its own words, a Biker Bash in the Boondocks.
It runs at the county fairgrounds in Petersburg, on the Sangamon River just north of Springfield and next door to New Salem, where the two-lanes follow river bluffs before flattening back into central Illinois prairie.
The weekend has been thirty dollars a head, camping with an electric hookup thirty a night, and primitive camping free. That last figure is the one worth knowing, because it sets the character of the thing: the field fills with people who came to camp rather than people who came to spend.
Forty-one years in, this is a club and independent crowd rather than a day-trip one. Bring a tent, expect a field, and take the river roads in rather than the interstate.
