About this event
Plenty of state rallies are fundraisers. Few are held on ground the organisation owns outright, and fewer still began as a way of paying the light bill.
ABATE of Indiana was founded on 25 June 1975 by Wanda Hummel-Schultz, to fight mandatory helmet laws and the harassment of riders over handlebar height and muffler noise. The Boogie came about five years later under Michael "Balls" Farabaugh, as what ABATE's own history calls a membership growing tool. The first one sent its entire takings, six hundred dollars, to the state office to help cover bills. Forty-seven editions on it is still the organisation's annual fundraiser, and the proceeds still go to advocacy and rider education.
It runs four days at Lawrence County Recreational Park in the southern Indiana hills, on ABATE's own land, with a scenic ride out from the gate. National acts have included Lynyrd Skynyrd and Ted Nugent. There is a free bike show, a swap meet, a motorcycle rodeo and field events. Fifty dollars for members, seventy for everyone else, camping and showers included. Strictly eighteen and over, no pets.
Every motorcycle on site gets a numbered wristband matched to its rider's, so the whole campground is tagged in pairs.
