The capital letters in the middle of the name are not a typographer's mistake. bELIeve is for Eli Seth Matthews, diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at six years old in November 2007 and dead by January 2011. His parents, Paul Matthews and Jennifer Middleman, run the Eli Seth Matthews Leukemia Foundation out of Oxford, Pennsylvania, and this show is how it raises its money. Through chemotherapy, radiation, a spell of blindness and a stem-cell transplant, Eli kept a prayer list, and he worked through everyone else on it before he got to himself.
The show takes over Cecil County Dragway on Theodore Road, a quarter-mile strip in the farm country just south of the Mason-Dixon line. Bikes are judged alongside cars and trucks in classes with trophies, and the rest of the day fills out with a car audio competition, a swap meet and vendors. Gate entry has run at twenty dollars a vehicle.
It is a static show rather than a ride, and the picture that stays with you is the Powerwheels race: small children pedalling plastic cars down a professional drag strip.
