A second-year ride out of the Harley-Davidson dealership on Lakeview Road, organised by American Legion Riders Post 1776. The suggested donation is twenty-five dollars a vehicle. What makes this one worth listing rather than lumping in with every other charity run is that the beneficiary is unusually specific: the veterans' community and recreation fund at the CSM Bennie G. Adkins Veterans Home in Enterprise. The money buys things for the men and women living there rather than disappearing into a general pot, and Adkins himself was a Medal of Honor recipient from the Special Forces camp at A Shau. The dealership carries the Dothan name despite the Ozark address, which catches out riders following a satnav. Southeast Alabama is flat, open and fast, and the roads between Ozark, Enterprise and the Choctawhatchee bottoms make for an easy, unhurried morning in the saddle.
