35th Annual Rescue Mission Ride

About this event
Most charity rides collect for a shelter. This one forms up in the shelter's car park. A.B.A.T.E. of Kansas District 4 — riders' rights people rather than a dealership — start the Rescue Mission Ride from the Topeka Rescue Mission itself, which means the residents it raises money for stand and watch the bikes leave from their own front door. Frank Votaw began it in 1993 and has been plain about why: it was dedicated to a friend of his who had died, and who, in Votaw's words, taught him about the true brotherhood. Thirty-five runnings later the sums are honest rather than impressive — three thousand one year, three and a half the next, a couple of thousand in a lean one — and they are handed over in person. Twenty dollars a rider buys a forty-five-minute run north-east into the Perry Lake country, rolling wooded two-lane above the Kansas River, finishing at the American Legion post in Perry with door prizes. Short, easy and sociable: a half day rather than a trip.
