Most charity rides end with a cheque. On this one the cargo is the donation, and it is visible from a quarter of a mile away.
The Children's Advocacy Center of Collin County has run it since 1993. The centre works alongside police and child protective services on abuse investigations, and every child who comes in for a forensic interview leaves with a new bear. The ride is where the bears come from. Riders strap them to sissy bars, handlebars, panniers and pillion seats, and the centre's own description of the column — an incredible visual reminder that child abuse has no place in Collin County — is about as close to accurate as that sort of line gets.
It is roughly sixty miles of flat North Texas arterial road, staging in Frisco and finishing at the Harley-Davidson Financial Services site in Plano with food trucks, bike games, a band and raffles. Counts have gone close to a thousand bikes.
Nobody has published who started it or why, which after thirty-four years is its own kind of answer. It suits any rider; the pace is easy and the company is largely cruisers.
