2nd Annual Miles for Mercy Poker Run

About this event
A poker run usually funds something with a future — a children's ward, a scholarship, a rescue. This one funds hospice. The money goes to Frederick Health Hospice, which handles end-of-life care, palliative care and grief support across Frederick County, and the mercy in the name is the mission rather than a person.
It was started by Tracy O'Clair, who does the marketing for the shop it runs out of, and the numbers say how quickly it has caught on. The first running raised two thousand one hundred and thirty-eight dollars and seventy-four cents. For the second, more than four thousand was committed in sponsorship before a single rider turned a wheel.
It is AMA-sanctioned and properly run: cards collected at stops across the county, finishing north toward the Catoctin foothills with a car and bike show, a silent auction, a fifty-fifty draw and an after-party fed by the sponsoring restaurants.
The detail worth holding onto is that first total, carried out to the cent. It is the figure of a small event that counted every dollar, and it is the one they are trying to beat.
