About this event
Nobody seems to have recorded who started this ride. The charity at the end of it, by contrast, has its origins written down to the surnames.
Penrickton is not a word. In 1952 three families - Penman, Ricker, Wigginton - put the fronts of their names together and opened a day nursery in Taylor for blind preschool children, because there was nowhere in the area that would take them. By the early sixties it had begun accepting blind children with additional disabilities, which is still who it serves: five-day residential care, day care, nursing, occupational and music therapy, three children to each member of staff.
The ride is billed as the largest charity run in southeast Michigan and has put more than a million dollars into that building. Three thousand or so riders gather at the Cabela's lot in Dundee, then go across southeast Michigan to the Harley dealership in Taylor for barbecue and a band. Entry has lately been under thirty dollars with lunch included.
The picture is the staging: three thousand bikes filling a superstore car park on a Sunday morning, waiting to roll.
