19th Annual Bruce's Moose Run - Memorial Ride
Wednesday, June 9, 2027 · 9 AM · Essex Junction, Vermont
About this event
Bruce Brown hit a moose on Route 17 at Starksboro in the summer of 2007. Broken ribs, a brain injury, a broken neck, and his riding partner George Fon keeping him breathing at the roadside until the ambulance came. Then his insurer refused the claim, on the grounds that a motorcycle counted as a recreational vehicle.
That refusal is why this ride exists. Brown and David Pearson set up the Moose Foundation out of Essex Junction to pay for the things a rider's insurance will not, for anyone hurt on a bike in Vermont, with a particular eye to the ones who hit an animal. The run is the foundation's main fundraiser and has been for close to twenty years.
The roads are the attraction and the hazard at once: Vermont back country around Starksboro and the Champlain valley, which is moose country, and the herd moves through it.
Close to a hundred bikes have turned out for it. They ride the roads that put the man's name on the fund.
