A toy run in high summer looks like a mistake in a listing. It is not. American Legion Osborne Post 99 in Minburn has held this one in late July for the better part of two decades, and the seventeenth went out in July as well.
Minburn is a village of a few hundred people on the Raccoon River Valley Trail west of Des Moines, and the post is the busiest thing in it: assistance for disabled veterans, funeral colour guards, a Fourth of July pie auction, a Veterans Day dinner, and a travelling museum about prisoners of war that the post takes out to other towns. Who receives the toys is not something the post publishes, and neither is the entry fee, so it is worth a telephone call before loading up.
The riding is flat Dallas County grid road, so the route is not the reason to go.
The reason is the sort of post that keeps a museum. A Legion branch in a village that small, running a travelling exhibition about prisoners of war and a toy run six months out of season, is not doing either of those things because they are easy.
