13th Annual Spider's Poker Run- Run around the Mountain

Saturday, August 28, 2027 · TBD · Flagstaff, Arizona

About this event

Most memorial runs are named after someone the club lost on a bike. Spider was a computer repairman. Rick Wiselus fixed machines at Northern Arizona University for twenty years and ran his own shop, Computer Wise, in Flagstaff from 1986 -- but he had been a Marine avionics technician from 1969 to 1973, and it is the Marine Corps League that keeps his run going.

The San Francisco Peaks Detachment 912 organises it and puts the proceeds into its Wounded Veterans Program. Thirty dollars buys a hand. The detachment pays out for the best hand and for the worst, which tells you the temper of the day. Cars and side-by-sides are welcome, so expect a mixed field.

The name is the route: around the mountain. Flagstaff sits at seven thousand feet in ponderosa pine forest with Humphreys Peak north of town, and a loop of it is cool, high and unhurried in a way that counts for a great deal in an Arizona summer.

Wiselus rode a Road King, mostly with his son. The organisers spell the nickname both ways, Spider and Spyder, and have never settled it.

Is this your event? If anything here is wrong — the date, the town, the details — or you would like to add to it, tell us and we will fix it.
