The name is a dealership joke. The charity behind it was started by two women who had just come through their own treatment.
Debbie Wood and Elizabeth Fry set up the Solano Midnight Sun Breast Cancer Foundation in 2004, both of them survivors, after working out during their own illness how much of their survival had come down to money, family and access to care — and how many women in Solano County had none of the three. The foundation covers the uninsured and underinsured through treatment. Iron Steed Harley-Davidson in Vacaville has run this for it since 2014. Nobody has published whose idea it was, or who coined the name.
It is a blackjack run rather than a poker run: two stops, cards drawn toward twenty-one, the route released nearer the day. Registration is at the dealership, the ride goes out mid-morning, and the party afterwards runs to a band, food trucks, games and a bikini bike wash. Thirty-five dollars early, lunch and a shirt included.
Vacaville sits on the hinge between the Sacramento Valley floor and the Vaca hills, so the good road is west toward Napa and it is over quickly.
